Yesterday and Tomorrow...

I didn't expect yesterday's blog to garner as much attention as it did.  Thanks, all!  I just like sharing my random hobby.

I realized after I posted that I left out what could possibly be my favorite random person shot EVER.

Yup.  I'm WAY proud of that one...

Whoever you are, random Asian lady, I apologize for catching you at that very amazing moment.

Moving on.

It is Friday, in case you haven't noticed.  I am sitting at the computer in my old desk chair, since Robb's desk chair broke yesterday, toppling me backwards onto the floor with a scream.  You should have been here.  Except, I wasn't clothed...you know...since I don't dress until after I shower, and I don't normally shower right when I get up.  So maybe you shouldn't have been here.

Anynaked, I'm sitting here in the squeaky orange chair that I got from God knows where (there's a matching one at my mom's house), and I'm dreading getting up, because I know I'll have to peel my ass off the seat.  *riiiip*

No fun at all.

That's not where I was going with this!  Argh!  Now I've lost my train of thought and all you're concerned with is either getting rid of or holding on to the mental image of me toppling backwards out of a desk chair in my birthday suit.

It's the weekend.  Enjoy it!  Tonight we've got a friend's birthday party to attend, and I think tomorrow we're going to see Robb's little nephew in a tee ball game.  So, fun!

Do something irrational.  Take a stranger's photo.  And then let me see it!

But...

I'd have photos for you,
but...
My camera's battery crapped out WAY early this weekend.

I'd have a blog post for you,
but...
I'm feeling kind of blah about not having a job right now.

I'd have something interesting for you,
but...
I don't want to just get on here and bitch again.

I'd have taken a shower and gotten dressed already today,
but...
I've been on the net, catching up from the weekend.

Tomorrow. My blog. Be there.

What Can Brown Do For You?

Why does the UPS guy always show up when I'm naked? Seriously...

And why is my boyfriend getting strange packages that I have no idea about? And why didn't he respond to my text about it?

This morning is full of mysteries! Oooh boy! I'ma put on my brown houndstooth detective cap with the flaps and put my pipe in my mouth, grab my magnifying glass, and search for clues!

It's getting closer to my birthday, so I won't be opening that package. Who knows what's in it. The last time a strange package showed up at our door it was a Frank N. Furter costume. This time? Who knows!

Let me tell you. I'm a little spastic this morning for no good reason. I thought I'd already blogged, and then I realized I hadn't. And it's not even 10! What's the deal? I haven't had this kind of energy since...well, before I was fired, that's for sure.

AND!!!!

It's gonna be 70 this week. 75!!! Maybe it won't snow on my birthday (Apr. 11) for once! The last 2 years, it has snowed. Bitches. But hey...it's supposed to be 65 today. Maybe I'll go ride my bike. It sure would help me get rid of this spastic energy. BAH!!!!!!

Umm...What Do I Say?

So...I've sat here for five minutes trying to figure out what I should post about today.  There's nothing new going on.

Eh...I got some CDs from the library, one of which was The Shins's Wincing the Night Away, and, honestly...I don't get it.  Maybe I haven't given it enough time to grow on me, but I've heard such great things from so many different people about it that I was really disappointed.  It's a little too...whiny...too precious...too...formless?  The songs are more like amorphous clouds of music and words than SONGS.  And when I can't find form in a song, it makes me sort of want it to be over, like, NOW.

I emailed my brother in Iraq this morning.  I haven't heard from him in a few months, and I'm hoping he's okay.  I'm sure he's fine.  We got a long time without talking even when he's in the states.  But last I heard his wife hadn't heard from him and my mom hadn't heard from him in a while.  Hrm.

*deleted*  I just started telling you guys about the lead that turned out to be an automotive job again.  Wow.  I really AM boring right now.

Blah.  Sorry for the lack of meat and potatoes.  Maybe you can caption this photo:

Have fun!

Moment of Being...

I am at work and the snow is falling straight down, soft, graceful. It is making everything seem hazy, like a romantic lens on the world. I am having lunch later today with a friend I have not seen in close to five years. I am not axious, like normal. I do not dread awkward pauses or feel like I won't have anything to say. I am genuinely looking forward to it. As I watch the little Bobcat plow the walks across the snowy lawn between my window at work and the street, I am filled with quiet joy, much like falling in love. Not with my lunch partner, but with winter, with snow, with the way this moment came into focus and will soon pass, all the more beautiful in its transience.

*EDIT*

So, seconds after I posted that, I checked my phone. My lunch date has been snowed out. Funny how the two sort of shorted each other out. Bah. Oh well...it's still pretty, and I'll be happy to go home and eat lunch with the cat under a warm blanket. And there's always tomorrow. Transient, indeed.

Finishing...

Yesterday was a day for finishing things. Our internet was down, so I was really productive.

In the morning I worked out and then went to get one tire put on my car. I know, I know...you should do them in pairs. But I just put tires on my car a year ago, and I wasn't about to pay for two when I only needed one. So...new tire. I have sneaking suspicion that Farm & Fleet fleeced me. I think maybe the seal was just broken, but they just replaced the tire without checking. Blah.

I came home and finished the new Zelda game for DS. The Spirit Tracks? Way fun! Who knew driving a train could be so intense?! But it's done. Over. Finito. Kaput.

Then I sat and finished a book I'd been reading called The Calling: A Year in the Life of an Order of Nuns. Let me tell you a secret. I love nuns. Love them! The book was pretty good, although her choices about how the book was arranged really made little sense to me. But it was still interesting.

And after that? I finished a book of poetry I'd been reading by Billy Collins. I love that man's poetry. He's my poetic idol.

I took down the Christmas tree and all the decorations, boxed them, put them away. Fed the fish and the cat.

Did I tell you we got a Betta fish? Robb's nephew gave it to him. The cat loves it! That's why we keep it WAAAAY up high.

So yeah...then I threw out the rest of the Christmas stuff...old cookies, old cake, etc. etc. etc. It was time.

Hooray for New Year's purge.

And today? I'm doing nothing but looking hot in my tank top and bed head. But seriously? I'm in the best shape of my life right now. In the middle of winter. After the holidays. How does that happen?!

And my Lady Gaga CD came today. Hooray for Amazon!

And now this random post is over. I'll stop boring you.

She Stuck Her Voodoo Pins Where My Eyes Used To Be...

Disregard the title. I've been listening to the new Mika album nonstop. It's wonderful.

And...I accidentally posted Top 5 Tuesday on my other blog yesterday, so...I may as well do it here today, right? Nothing like missing the mark entirely! It took me 3 hours before I realized it was Wednesday yesterday.

In other news...I'm driving to see the boy at work and having lunch with him. I love being a good boyfriend. It happens so infrequently.

Anywho...Top 5 Tuesday: Pinball Edition

Guess what, friends?  It's the triumphant return of Top 5 Tuesday!

I'm sure we've all spent a few quarters in a pinball machine in our lives.  Me?  I've spent more than anyone ever should.  I could probably buy every machine on this list with the number of quarters I've used playing pinball in my lifetime.  But some of you may not know where to start.  That's where this handy list comes in!  If ever you see one of these in an arcade, you'll know it's worth the quarters!  I give you the top 5 pinball machines I've ever had the pleasure of playing:

5) Tales From the Crypt

I remember playing this game in the general store of a campground we used to visit every year.  It's been probably close to fifteen years since I've played it, but I remember it being one of the most fun pinball machines I've ever used.  The Cryptkeeper was your guide through the game, and despite his creepiness, he never fell short of having a good quip when you failed.  The ball launger in the form of a doorknocker-representation of him was a nice touch!  I also remember this game having the loosest match numbers at the end of the game of any pinball machine I've ever used...and that means more free games!

4)  The Simpsons

This machine has eaten far too many of my quarters.  I would say that of all the games on my list, this one is the most unforgiving.  There must be something about the pastel paradise of Springfield under the glass that drives balls to the no zone.  It's not a fantastic pinball game, but, like everything else that has the Simpsons' name on it, people play it no matter how much it sucks.  I think maybe there was a little too much going on under the hood, but that's what makes it so much fun and captures the zaniness of Springfield.

3)  Hook

This game lands itself on the list because it's the easiest pinball machine I've ever played.  I'm no pinball wizard, but even I have trouble losing a ball in this one.  And with scores totaling in the hundreds of millions, it makes even the worst player feel like a big shot!  The skill shot at the beginning is a great touch and keeps me coming back to nail just one more launch.  The fact that it has an instant replay feature which gives you one free ball if you truly suck or have terrible luck on a ball is enough to set it apart from any other game on the market.  The icing on the cake?  Hearing Captain Hook say, "I hate, I hate, I hate Peter Pan!"

2)  Fire!

I know what you're thinking:  A pinball game based on the Chicago Fire?  How on earth does that work?  Quite well, let me tell you!  It's one of the only pinball machines that I've ever been able to figure out, goal-wise.  You're supposed to bep utting out the fires and saving the citizens of the city one flick at a time.  There's a rather loud fire bell on the top of this machine that rings every time you hit the multiplier, which multiplies your bonus at the end of a round by how many times you hit it.  That means huge bonuses and free games for people who can keep the ball going.  A great feature of this machine is a certain ramp that captures a ball and tells you a firefighter is trapped.  You're tasked with raising the ladder to the burning building and launching the ball up the ramp, triggering a multi-ball, the joy of pinball enthusiasts everywhere!  It's mayhem; it's loud; it's fun; it's Fire!

1)  Taxi

We've come to the top of my list, the cream of the crop, the best damn pinball game there is, in my humble opinion.  Doubtful?  Let me tell you this, then:  Nowhere else can you find Mikhail Gorbachev, Marilyn Monroe, Santa Claus, Dracula, and Pinbot in one place!  In one taxi, no less!  They're your targets in this madcap game with a sense of humor, and y'all know how I love a game with a sense of humor.  Your bonus at the end of every ball depends on how many of them you can cram into your taxi without losing.  Fill it full and take a joyride, and the points shoot through the roof!  Each character has their own voice and will call out when you're close to picking them up, and each shot gives you points depending on how many times you can "spin out" in the ramp off the main shoot.  It's a riot, and I've spent enough money in this thing to buy the machine!

So there you have it, my list for the top 5 pinball machines of all time.  Have you played any of these?  What would you put on the list?

Full...

Seeing 10 friends on three separate days whom I hadn't seen for months, making applesauce (that is expletive-worthy AMAZING) and cupcakes with the boy, going out for breakfast (one of my favorite things to do), being chased by a chainsaw wielding maniac in the haunted corn maze, too much junk food, great conversation, tons of laughs, new Mika album, writing group, and just a twist of sexual tension...

It was a full weekend, to say the least. I needed it.

Damn My Memory...

I was going to cross-post my Top 5 Tuesday post this morning and I forgot. I told myself I'd do it when I went home for lunch. I forgot. So...I'm not holding out much hope that I'll remember to do it when I get home. It might be a Top 5 Wednesday post...

For those of you who wonder, it's a Top 5 post about my best blog posts from my other blog. Hooray for #999! Tomorrow is #1000.

If you want to congratulate me, try clicking [here].

So there. I'll be back shortly...

Waiting Is the Hardest Part...

I kept a lid on it the other day and didn't boil over, so that's nice. No catastrophe to speak of, except that I'm still employed by the bank. And that really is a blessing, honestly, despite the high levels of job-related hatred on the meters.

The reason you haven't seen much of me is that I usually cross-post between my other blog and this one, but theo ther blog is nearing the 1000 posts mark, and most of the posts have pertained to that. And since I have barely been here for over 100 posts, it would be silly to talk about the 1000th. Thus, my silence.

So I apologize for that.

In the next week or so, I hope to do a post about fortune cookies. I cleaned out my wallet and found about fifty of them, so I think I'll do a "best of" thing. Anywho...that's the news from Lake Woebegon.

I now return you to your regular lives...

Snippets on Tuesday...

I've been writing snippets of poetry, things that aren't quite fully realized but that need to be recorded.

Things like this:

And when she comes to it,
She'll know it's the end.
No bells; no party.
Just a quiet slipping between the sheets.

I've felt the vague urge to write poetry lately, like there is someting pushing its way up from my subconscious like a whale beneath a frozen ocean. And as far as this metaphor goes, I'm sitting on top going, "Whoa...it feels a litle rumbly..." And then not being able to express it any more creatively than that.

I think it's there. I just have to prime the pump. It's been so long.

And they're all about her. All my snippets, about some random girl (perhaps the girl in the green dress--or was it a coat--that sometimes come through my peripheral imagination?). My muse? I don't know. All I do know is that she's gotten on a bus and had all eyes on her for a second. Some, longer. And she walks.

Anywho...labor pains.

Obligatory Update...

Okay, all. Obviously there's nothing exciting going on in my life right now. If there were, I'd be updating. The last post I actually wrote was for my other blog, and all it contained was a snippet about how sometimes, when I eat peach yogurt, all I can taste is cheese.

It's true.

What's going on in my life?

I'm saving for vacation.
I rode my bike 5.5 miles.
I am sunburned and entering that itchy stage.
Punch Out!! for the Wii is phenomenal. It's every bit as good as the original NES game and maybe even better.
I repeat, "There you are. Have a nice day." seven hundred thousand times a week.
I got bitten by our cat the other day.
My boyfriend is still a gimp, but he's getting better.
I'm off Monday. Bank holiday.

Other than that...there's really nothing going on. So...my apologies for not updating.

Adventures In Oil Changing....

You know what the best way to get an oil change is? Taking your car three blocks to the shop and reading a book while you talk to the receptionist. Highly recommended.

While I was in there she said, "That's weird. You're the second Difazzio we've had in here today." And instantly all the bells and whistles in my head started going off. Red flags and sirens...mostly because I never want to have to run into my dad again. Ever.

"That's odd," I said. "There aren't very many of us."

"Do you have family in St. Charles?" she asked. (I breathed an instant sigh of relief.)

"Not that I'm aware of..." I said, curious. "What are their names?"

"Well, her name is Judy, and his name is...Joe? John?"

At this point I figured it wasn't anybody I knew. And then she says, "Oh, it's Jerry!"

Jerry and Judy are my uncle and aunt that I've never really met. He never came to any family functions, and she's his wife. I think I've seen Jerry a total of twice in my life. He walked through the hospital waiting room on his way to the bathroom when my grandma was dying. And...he must have been at the funeral, although I don't remember seeing him there. My dad always said he was an asshole. And...given what an asshole my dad is, I've always wanted to meet Jerry. He's probably actually a really cool guy. Or maybe he's an asshole. I guess I'll never know.

So that was exciting. And do you know what isn't exciting?

Tuesday I was leaving the Borders parking lot and my steering wheel was having issues turning right. And yesterday on my way back from Wheaton it was hissing when I turned right. So I asked them to check on it for me.

$534 and change. That's what it will cost to replace the rack. As in, rack and pinion. Or rack and peanut if you're Homer J. Simpson.

So...that's money I don't have. My mom said to use my tax return. She was apparently the one person I hadn't told my tax-related tale of woe to. I owed the fed $30.25. I get $60 from the state. Whoopty-fucking-doo.

And we just bought plane tickets two weeks ago for our vacation. Everything's just coming up roses for me.

But Robb reminded me that I purchased a warranty on the car when I bought it. And I have to call them back today and see if it would cover them replacing the rack. And if so, that'd be fucking amazing. And if not...that would be...well, not so fucking amazing.

So...hooray for adventures. My $23 oil change is about to cost me over $500.

Woot.
