Civil Union...

My lovely state of Illinois just approved civil unions. That means that Robb and I, instead of saying, "well...maybe someday when it's legal," are saying, "well...maybe Tuesday."

Not really. I mean, we've discussed it, and the best reason to do it at the moment is that I'd be able to be covered under his insurance, so I'd finally have health insurance for the first time since college. That was five-and-a-half years and two teeth ago. It would be very nice to have insurance. It would be very nice to be civil-unioned.

Civilly uned?

Civilly united. That's probably what it is. I prefer the previous iteration. Uned. Like, {yoond}. It sounds so dirty. Anyway...

Since people have been asking me about my thoughts and whether or not they'd be hearing wedding bells--sorry, civil union bells...wouldn't want to offend the semantically-obsessed--in the near future, I figured I' just put it out there.

Am I ready? Sure. Are we ready? I think so.

But I don't want to just race off to the court house to get it done. I want a ceremony. I want a wedding. Friends. Family. Presents. I don't want my mom to have to miss ANOTHER of her sons' weddings...you know, since my brother was married for a year and a month before he told us...And I know that if we raced off and got the forms and just united for insurance purposes, I'd never get a ceremony. Saving for a ceremony would fall to the end of the priority list, since we'd already technically be united. But dang it, I want a wedding!

So, soon? Probably not. Someday? I hope so!

I think it's great that you're not rushing into it, especially if you want a ceremony and all that goes along with it. That said, I can't wait until you reveal that you're planning such an event :)

I'm just happy you get to actually have the conversation!

Do what's right for you guys.

Keep me posted! :-)

Personally, I'm going through some vexation over marriage, much of it largely directed towards straight people and the bloody religious right. Maybe it's the marriage amendment controversy in Minnesota but I personally want nothing to do with it anymore. Not only am I light-years away from being married (or finding someone to marry), I'm also incredibly angry with the overall institution, the way that gays have been treated, and the pipe dream that it seems to be. (Gawd, I sound jaded!) That may well change in the future, but aside from the legal equality that would be afforded us, I just want to be left alone with my future man.

You also have a family who would celebrate your union with you, and that’s another bitter point for me. When it comes down to it, I guess it’s an individual decision. You do what’s right for you.

Someday, Bryan. Someday.

Emily, thanks!

And David, very true. I share some of your feelings about marriage, but if and when the time comes, I'm embracing it. And yeah...having half a family that supports it is a good thing.

Awesome! And I have no clue why but I've been thinking you lived in Cali this whole time.
